A scholarship student of Nadia Boulanger at the Conservatoire Americaine in Fontainebleau, Elizabeth Scheidel Austin studied at the Peabody Conservatory, Goucher College and the Hartt School. During her Ph.D. studies at the University of Connecticut, she won First Prize in the David Lipscomb Electronic Music Competition. Other awards include a grant from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, First Prize in the IAWM’s Miriam Gideon Competition, and an artist's residency in Bellagio, Italy through the Rockefeller Foundation. Her music has been performed throughout Europe with recent premieres in Weimar, Mannheim, Nashville, and Baltimore. Dr. Austin and her husband, Prof. Gerhard Austin, facilitate cultural exchanges through internationally sponsored projects in Europe.
Often called upon to translate scholarly papers and books, Dr. Austin also acts as interpreter for German-speaking composers. She is President of Connecticut Composers, Inc. as well as organist and choir director at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Windham Center.
Arsis Press has published her sacred choral piece, Christ Being Raised for SATB. Other music is available through Tonger Verlag and the American Composers Alliance and recorded on the Capstone and Leonarda labels. A book on her life and music, based on a doctoral dissertation (2000) by Dr. Michael Slayton, is in progress.
